Yoga / Hot Yoga Stretches![]() Hot Yoga stretches combine a specific sequence of yoga postures done in a heated room. For positive results and lasting benefits, those who practice it usually do so about three times per week. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and consists of simple poses made more challenging by the hot, steamy conditions of the classroom Bikram Yoga and Hot Yoga Bikram Choudhury invented Bikram Yoga with the established 26 postures in the routine. Hot Yoga is a variation of Bikram Yoga, but is not the same. Bikram Choudhury demands that only Bikram-certified instructors can teach the 26 postures of Bikram Yoga, and it must be referenced as Bikram Yoga, not Hot Yoga. Why a Heated Room is Important Hot Yoga is performed in a room heated from 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat not only warms the muscles, but also loosens the ligaments and joints of the body, helping to prevent injury and allow for a deeper workout. The heated room also causes the body to sweat, which allows for the natural release of poisons and toxins. Benefits of Hot Yoga Stretches Those who practice this form of yoga believe that peak performance is achieved when the body is fully warmed up and produces heat from within, which radiates into the muscles. As a result, the body is able to burn fat more successfully and efficiently, and those practicing are able to increase their metabolism to help break down glucose and fatty acids. The stretches are extremely fluid, permit a greater range of motion in the muscles, ligaments and joints, and increase overall flexibility of the body. Greater flexibility lessens the chance of injury, and also promotes faster healing of existing injuries. As the temperature of the body rises it demands more oxygen, which in turn increases circulation. The freshly-oxygenated blood flows to the muscles, joints, ligaments and organs of the body, bringing healing properties along with it. Because of the taxing circumstances, those who regularly practice yoga in a heated room gain willpower, self-control, and concentration. Tips The following tips will help those practicing Hot Yoga stretches to get the maximum benefits: Bring your own personal yoga mat and towel. You will need a "sticky" mat, which will not slip when it becomes damp. Those made of 100 percent cotton will provide the most absorbency. Wear extremely lightweight clothing, as you will be sweating profusely during the class. Drink lots of water before and after class to avoid dehydration. Don't eat anything for two hours prior to the class. Make sure your yoga instructor is certified to teach hot yoga. Hot Yoga is not usually recommended for pregnant women, as it increases body temperature. After Practicing After class, you should cool down and drink plenty of fluids, especially water. It is normal to feel some soreness for the following couple of days, as yoga is known for stretching and strengthening weak areas of the body. With regular practice, the soreness will subside and balance will come to the body, mind, and spirit. |
