Large Pores Concern

Reader Question
I am currently using the Obagi Nuderm system and have found that while it was very effective when I first began using it, now it appears to have stopped working. I have been using it for approximately 4 months. I am 47 years old and really have great skin for my age; however, I am now having difficulty with what appears to be larger pores than before and cannot find a makeup that doesn't enhance the pores. Mineral makeup seems to sit in there and I look like I have some kind of skin condition. It really ages my skin. I am concerned with using a makeup that is good for my skin and there is so much information out there that it is difficult to separate the good from the bad. There is one other thing, I would like to know if there is any truth to the statement that using Retin A actually does more damage than good in the long run. Thanks for your help.

As far as the Obagi system, I have only heard excellent things about it. Four months is a short period of time to have a skincare regimen "stop working." It may in fact be working, just that you noticed significant changes early on when your skin was adjusting, and now, like so many of us, you are searching for that same affect that you experienced during the initial phase of use. If you are happy with the condition of your skin, except for the large pores, which, quite frankly, as we age simply cannot be avoided, then I suggest continuing your use of Obagi and perhaps calling one of their consultants to find out what you may need to add, such as an additional serum, night or eye cream.

As for your large pore dilemma--we all have them sista--unless we are 25 or younger, or have our pictures airbrushed like so many magazine models. Pores can often seem large when they're blocked with oil. So working to reduce that oil blockage may result in the appearance of smaller pores. Making some changes in your beauty habits--which you have already done--and diet may affect oil levels in your skin. As for camouflaging them, always use an oil-free foundation. Chanel and Shiseido Cosmetics both have excellent foundations and powders to choose from. Also, try brushing corn starch over your skin to absorb oil--it was recommended to me by a dermatologist years ago and I absolutely love it since I tend to be on the oily side myself.

Additionally, consider a great esthetician that specializes in deep poor extractions. Make an appointment for at least every 4-6 weeks and you will see a tremendous difference.

Dana

Dear Pam,One of the tried-and-true remedies for bags and puffiness is something you may not think of, Preparation H! Models have been using it for years and insist that it's the best. Although it can be somewhat greasy, it does the trick. You can also try using cucumbers or cooled chamomile tea bags on those days when your eyes are really out of hand. Of course, let's not forget getting more sleep!

Lancome has a fabulous eye treatment line, try the High Resolution Eye with Fibrelastine Intensive Recovery Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream or the High Resolution Eye with Collaser 48. Also, don't forget to get yourself a great concealer and use it everyday AFTER you apply your eye care cream or gel. Prescriptives Flawless Skin Total Protection Concealer is one of the best I've tried.
